Backyard Beats Listing 6/18: Sponge and a Celebration of Life This Weekend!

Here is a listing of area live music and online music happenings for the weekend and week of Friday, June 18 through Thursday, June 24.

With the continued easing of COVID-19-related restrictions, more live music venues across the area are hosting performances. The listing below includes both area live public shows and online live-streaming shows; keep checking back, as this listing will be updated as new shows are announced.

If you are attending a public show, be aware that seating and admission may be limited at some locations due to remaining COVID-19 restrictions, and masks and social distancing may be required. Please be responsible, and respect others’ personal space if they wish to socially distance from other people.

For online performances, if a “virtual tip jar” situation is available during live streams, please consider tipping these performers, and support them during this time when they cannot earn income playing shows at public venues. Websites for these performers are also listed; please consider purchasing their music digitally or via CD, which is another way to SUPPORT LIVE MUSIC!

The inaugural “Rockin’ the Yard” concert series event launches this Friday evening at the Jaffa Shrine Center’s upper parking lot. Established after the discontinuation of the “Alive at Five” concert series at the Railroaders Museum, “Rockin’ the Yard” will present six concert events during the summer season. Kiss tribute group Cold Gin and local openers This Albatross will provide the music for the first concert, which starts at 6 p.m.

Also on Friday night, national recording group Sponge makes their third visit to McGarvey’s in Altoona. Formed in Detroit in 1992, Sponge attained national and international acclaim for songs such as their 1994 hit “Plowed,” their 1995 hit “Molly (16 Candles Down the Drain)” and their 1996 hit “Wax Ecstatic (To Sell Angelina).” Opening the show will be Washington, D.C.’s Double Motorcycle and local rockers Jack Squat. The doors open at 6 p.m.

And two events on Saturday will celebrate the life of local musician and singer Steve Shiffler, who lost his life in a work-related accident in late October. The “Celebration of Life for Steven K. Shiffler” will take place at the Unter Uns Musical & Entertainment Society, Altoona starting at 2 p.m. This event will feature This Albatross, the band fronted by Steve’s daughter, Autumn Grooves Wagner, along with an onstage reunion of some of Steve’s former bandmates. Steve fronted several popular Altoona area bands over the past four decades; including XL, Not Them Guys, Detour, Legacy and others. Also happening on Saturday will be the “Steven K. Shiffler Musicians Softball Tournament, which kicks off at 12 noon at Altoona’s Garfield Park. Eight softball teams comprised of an assortment of area musicians will take part. Proceeds from the event will help out eight local nonprofit organizations, as well as the Central PA Rec Commission and Kid Careers. There will be music and food vendors at the event.
