Here is a listing of area live music and online music happenings for the weekend and week of Friday, July 23 through Thursday, July 29.
Lots of musical activity hits area stages this weekend and upcoming week, with several noteworthy events on the slate.
The “church” of rock’n’roll will reconvene at McGarvey’s on Tuesday night with the return of national recording artists The Reverend Horton Heat. The “Reverend,” Jim Heath, and his band will bring the roots-rocking firestorm to the stage; also on the bill are Virginia’s Hackensaw Boys, comedian Don Jamieson (former host of VH-1 Classic’s “That Metal Show”) and local “dadcore” punk rockers The Snipped. The doors open at 6 p.m., and the music gets under way at 7:30 p.m.
The third installment of the “Rockin’ the Yard” concert series convenes Friday evening in the upper parking lot of Altoona’s Jaffa Shrine. Renowned favorites Felix & the Hurricanes kick off the music at 6 p.m., followed by New York City-based Aerosmith tribute group Last Child at 8 p.m. Food and refreshments will be available, and proceeds from ticket sales benefit Shriners Children’s Hospital, Blair/Clearfield County Association for the Blind and FC 814 youth soccer.
Saturday features concert events for fans of country music and southern rock. “Real Country Riverfest” brings a loaded slate of country performers to the Lazy Dayz Campground near Alexandria. Performers include Whey Jennings (grandson of legendary country star Waylon Jennings), Harrisburg alt-country performers Cold Spring Union, Harrisburg’s Colt Wilbur Band, Harrisburg bluegrassers Seldom Said No and more. The music kicks off at noon.
Meanwhile, Southern Rock Wood Stock takes the stage on Saturday afternoon at Wagon Wheel Amphitheater near Philipsburg. Among the performers are the Southern Mules, featuring Blackfoot founding member Charlie Hargrett. Also taking the stage are Cleveland-based southern rock tribute the Southern Rock Superstars, Kid Rock tribute Rebel Soul, Texas-based Anything But Human, Harrisburg-based southern rockers Buckskin Whiskey and more. Tickets are sold out for this event, with proceeds going toward Homeless Warriors Charity. The music kicks off at 1 p.m.
And fair season arrives in central PA this week with the return of the annual Bedford County Fair. The fair opens Sunday and lasts through Saturday, with live music performers each day; see the listing below to see who is performing throughout the week.
