Here is a listing of area live music and online music happenings for the weekend and week of Friday, March 25 through Thursday, March 31.
For those folks anxiously awaiting the return of the PA Roundhouse Rally concert series at Roundhouse Harley-Davidson near Duncansville, Roundhouse is hosting an appetizer event on Saturday afternoon. The Help 4 Harley Bike Giveaway event begins at 12 noon, and will raise funds for the Central PA Humane Society. Included will be a chili and wing challenge with three kinds of chili and three kinds of wings, basket giveaways and a 50/50 drawing, a 2021 Harley-Davidson Softtail motorcycle to be given away at 4 p.m. (with chances being sold for $20 apiece), and live music courtesy of local outlaw country favorites Stephanie & the Wildhearts. The event is being presented by the PA Roundhouse Rally, a 501c3 nonprofit organization.
For fans of railroad history and train songs, the ArtsAltoona Center will host Philadelphia-based acoustic duo Artese & Toad on Saturday evening. Taking place in the venue’s Sanctuary, the show will spotlight the talents of Perry Artese and Tom Dimeo, who have been making music for more than 40 years. After writing one railroad song called “Daddy’s Old Train Box,” Artese & Toad went on to create an entire album of railroad-themed songs, “They Don’t Write Songs About Trains Anymore,” in 2001. Sparked by the success of that album among railroad and train fans worldwide, the duo created a second album four years later, which included some songs connected to the local area and its railroad legacy – “Altoona” and “Ghost on the Track,” which references the historic Horseshoe Curve. The music will kick off at 7 p.m. with an opening set by local performers Don Osborn and Bill Hunter (of The Band OZ and Triple Threat fame), and there will also be a performance of the popular American folk song “I’ve Been Working on the Railroad” courtesy of the Altoona Horseshoe Chorus. Some railroad and train-themed artwork will also be on display. Tickets for the show are $10 per person.
State College’s historic State Theatre will present the “Women’s Voices” concert on Saturday evening. During this event, a myriad of local bands and performers – Canary, Raven & the Wren, Hannah Bingman, Anchor & Arrow, Hops & Vines with Mare Cleary, Miss Melanie, Kristi Jean & Her Ne’er Do Wells and Natascha & the Spy Boys – will celebrate women’s voices in music and in life. Emceeing the concert will be Tierra Williams. The concert begins at 8 p.m. Tickets are $35, and can be purchased in advance through the State Theatre’s website, www.statetheatre.org. Proceeds from ticket sales will benefit the State Theatre.
And McGarvey’s in Altoona will host a taste of German punk rock on Wednesday night, as Munich-based “dirty trumpet punk” performers Doping the Void will appear as part of their current U.S. tour. Formed in 2007, Doping the Void – featuring “3 sight-challenged, black-haired whisky drinkers” and a soul trumpeter – developed their brand of “rough-n-roll.” Expect wild, hard, punk-driven rock with a soul trumpet topping. Also performing will be Bedford’s Bad Luck Lover Boys and western PA’s Phantom Railway. The music begins at 7 p.m.
