Backyard Beats Listing 4/1/22: No April Fool’s Joke: A Ramone Is In Town This Weekend!

Here is a listing of area live music and online music happenings for the weekend and week of Friday, April 1 through Thursday, April 7.

It’s not an April Fool’s joke that a former member of The Ramones will be performing in the area this weekend. Richie Ramone (born Richard Reinhardt) – who played drums for The Ramones from 1983 to 1987 – will make his return visit to McGarvey’s in Altoona on Friday night. One of four surviving members of The Ramones, Richie played on three of the group’s albums and penned six songs during his time with the group. He was also the only drummer to sing lead vocals on a Ramones song, “(You) Can’t Say Anything Nice,” as well as an unreleased Joey Ramone demo song, “Elevator Operator.” Expect Richie and his band to play a lot of classic Ramones tunes, as well as some of his other song creations. Opening the show will be New York City rockers Public Nature, as well as local punk-rocking favorites X’s For Eyes and The Snipped. The doors open at 6 p.m., with music beginning at 7 p.m.

Although this weekend’s weather forecast doesn’t exactly scream “spring,” the ArtsAltoona Center will host its “Spring Art Market” on Saturday afternoon. Running from noon until 5 p.m., the market will include a number of local artist vendors showcasing their creations to the community. Live music will also be a part of the event, with Neon & Atlas, Little Jimmy Mellon Baller, Victor Clark and Strings performing throughout the afternoon. Food and drink will be available as well, and admission is free.

A benefit spaghetti dinner will take place Sunday afternoon at Altoona’s Unter Uns Musical & Entertainment Society. Organized by the local rock band Bone Jacked, the event will raise funds for the surviving family of Tom Petitt, a longtime fan of the group. Tom, who served in the U.S. Marine Corps, was a member of several churches and worked as a steel fabricator for many years, passed away in January; leaving behind his wife, Julie, a daughter and stepson. Besides the spaghetti dinner, the event will also feature baskets, lottery tree and 50/50 drawings, and music from Bone Jacked. Donation at the door is $10 per person, which includes the dinner and the music.

And if you’re a country music fan, Dustin Lynch, the architect of such chart-topping country singles as “Hell of a Night,” “Where It’s At,” “Small Town Boy,” “Seein’ Red” and “Good Girl,” will be performing at the Cambria County War Memorial’s 1st Summit Arena on Saturday evening. The concert starts at 8 p.m. For those arriving early, local favorite Dany Vavrek will perform starting at 4:30 p.m.

Lots of activity will be on area stages throughout the next seven days, so check out the listing below, and SUPPORT LIVE MUSIC!
