A report by an Erie TV station indicates that the commonwealth is once again toying with the idea of heaping yet another fee upon drivers in Pennsylvania to increase revenue streams. The idea is to impose a mileage fee for drivers based on how many miles we drive our vehicles. This idea was discussed several years ago, and is now being resucitated. How to track mileage and collect the fees seem to be the sticking points, but state officials are looking for possible answers. The idea is to generate more funds for infrastructure because the 61 cent per gallon gas tax that we now pay in PA is not enough. Officials say that more fuel efficient vehicles are the problem, because the higher the gas mileage, the less gas drivers use, which in turn lowers gas tax revenue.
