Backyard Beats Listing 1/20/23: CPHS Chili Fest, Robert Burns Supper, Writers Round and More This Weekend!

Here is a listing of area live music and online music happenings for the weekend and week of Friday, January 20 through Thursday, January 26.

This weekend presents some fun live music-related events and opportunities to escape from cabin fever for a little while.

The Central PA Humane Society presents their annual Chili Fest & Wings on Saturday evening in the Bavarian Aid Society’s upstairs hall. The main event starts at 6 p.m., with a special VIP session beginning at 5 p.m. Obviously, chili and wings from a variety of area eateries, vendors and even individuals will be available to sample, and live music will be provided by area favorites Shallow 9. At the time of this posting, a few general admission and VIP tickets were still available, and can be purchased at the Humane Society’s shelter while supplies last.

Also on Saturday evening, the Jaffa Highlanders will present 13th annual Robert Burns Supper at The Casino at Altoona’s Lakemont Park. The event celebrates Scottish poet and lyricist Robert Burns, widely regarded as the national poet of Scotland, and credited for writing the poem “Auld Lang Syne,” which – set to an old Scottish folk melody – has become part of the tradition of New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day. A black tie affair, the event will feature food, drink, poetry, free drink tastings and live music from The Irish Pretenders. The event starts at 5:45 p.m.

The Pine Grove Hall in Pine Grove Mills (near State College) features noteworthy events both on Saturday and Sunday. Code: Blue – a popular State College soul and blues group first formed in the 1990s – will perform on Saturday night starting at 8 p.m. Now comprised of singers Terri Parker and Rene Oakman, lead guitar Chris Younken, bass Harry Werner, drummer John Raiser and guitarist Jerry Zolten; Code: Blue will perform a mixture of soul and blues-flavored original songs and covers. Opening will be singer and songwriter Sam Christensen. Admission is $12 per person.

Pine Grove Hall will then host a Writers Round event on Sunday evening starting at 6 p.m. Hosted by area songwriter Adam Yarger, the event will spotlight the songwriting and singing talents of four distinctive performers – Yarger, Paul Newby, Joe Quick and Chris Bell – in a “round” format, with the musicians each performing songs in a rotation. Admission is $10 per person.

Those are a few of the musical happenings this weekend. Browse the listing below to find out who else is on stage during this weekend and upcoming week, and – as always – SUPPORT LIVE MUSIC!
