A report from Philly and the Inquirer, suggests that Sheriff Rochelle Bilal is accused of asking for $2 million from the city to what she said was to hire more uniformed staff. But the inquirer reported that Bilal used other money to raise the salaries of her top officers in her office, and allegedly tried to more than double her own salary, up to $285,000 a year. Bilal accused the Inquirer of misrepresenting the facts, and said that the money used was never meant to hire more deputies. Bilal accused the inquirer of wanting the sheriff’s office abolished. She did say that $500,000 was used to pay what are described as “exempt” staffers within her office.
