In a report in the Altoona Mirror, officials at Norfolk Southern say that the owner of the rail car that apparently caused the crash near the Ohio/Pa border back in February should help pay for the damage and the attempted cleanup. According to the report, officials at Norfolk say that GATX did not follow manufacturers recommendations for taking care of the rail car that is at the center of the ongoing investigation. The National Transportation Safety Board says that a preliminary report shows that a bearing on this particular rail car may have overheated, which may have led the derailment and subsequent fire that poured smoke and chemicals into the town of East Palestine. Norfolk says that everyone involved with shipping hazardous chemicals should help bear some of the financial responsibility.
