Backyard Beats Listing 9/15/23: Ethnic, Arts, Hippie and Bacon Fests This Weekend!

Here is a listing of area live music and online music happenings for the weekend and week of Friday, September 15 through Thursday, September 21.

The cavalcade of late summer season festivals continues this weekend with several established events and one new one.

The new one is the inaugural Hippie Dayze Festival, happening Saturday and Sunday at the Wagon Wheel Amphitheater in Philipsburg. This family-friendly event features vendors, food and live music both days. Saturday’s performance schedule includes the Tussey Mountain Moonshiners, Lucid Yooth & the Cubensis Lenses and The Jaded Lips. Sunday’s schedule includes Felix & the Hurricanes, The Pines and StoneMan. There will also be hippie-themed crocheting and knitting circles, hair-braiding, facepainting, a tie-dye shirt tent, hula-hooping and more. The music begins at 1:30 p.m. both days. For more information, visit the website https://www.cultureandcriticism.com/hippie-dayze-festival.

Two ethnic-themed festivals take place this weekend. The Polacek Family Johnstown Slavic Festival happens Friday and Saturday at the Heritage Discovery Center near Cambria City in Johnstown. This festival celebrates Slavic culture, food, music and dance; and provides ethnic vendors, homemade Slavic food and Slavic beer, educational speakers and presentations, Slavic folk dancers, and Slavic musical bands and performers on two stages. Admission is free. See the listing below to find out the performance schedules, or visit the website https://www.jaha.org/events/johnstown-slavic-festival/ for more information.

Delgrosso’s Park in Tipton hosts the 33rd annual Italian Food & Heritage Festival on Sunday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. As always, this event will feature a variety of delicious Italian food; including entrees from the kitchens of Delgrosso, specialty breads from Pacifico Bakery, Italian pastries and treats from Mt. Carmel Church, wine sampling and bottle sales from Oak Spring Winery and Twisted Vine Winery, and red and green popcorn from Pappy’s Popcorn. Italian musical entertainment will be provided on the main stage by the Cavaliers Band at 1 and 3 p.m., and Accordionist Edwardo will stroll the festival area to serenade folks from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Admission to the festival is free.

The annual New Germany Festival of Arts & Crafts takes place Saturday and Sunday at New Germany Grove in New Germany. Arts and crafts vendors take the spotlight, with a multitude of vendor tents and displays to browse. Food and refreshments will also be available, and live music takes place both days. Bob Clawson and The Evergreens perform on Saturday, and Kimberly Dawn & Johann and the Whiskey River Panhandlers entertaining on Sunday. Admission is free.

And if you are craving bacon this weekend, head to the Geistown Fire Station in Johnstown on Friday and Saturday for the annual Fall’in Bacon Fest. Bacon and bacon-decorated food creations will be in the spotlight, as well as other food and beverage vendors. And live music takes place both days, with Octane rocking the crowd on Friday, and The Boomers and Midnight Graffiti entertaining on Saturday. Admission is free.

And two area fairs take place during the next seven days. The Cookport Fair in northeastern Indiana County wraps up on Saturday, and the Harmony Grange Fair gets under way Monday near Westover.

These events and many others provide lots of opportunities to enjoy live music in the next seven days. So browse the schedule below, pick an event or two (or more), and SUPPORT LIVE MUSIC!
