A State Senate bill signed by Governor Josh Shapiro is creating stronger penalties for so-called porch pirates – people who steal mail and boxes from people’s homes. Mail theft counts had previously been charged under theft offenses based solely on the value of the item taken. The new law offers specific penalties for thefts of a package, bag or letter, with penalties increasing for previous convictions.
