Several Pennsylvania state lawmakers are banding together to stop so-called “deepfakes” and other deceptive A-I use in political ads. The bipartisan group has introduced a bill that would ban video and other materials that fraudulently depict public officials, candidates and programs. Representative Bob Merski of Erie says the fraudulent “deepfakes” can be generated by capturing just a few seconds of someone’s voice. Anyone who creates these materials for distribution would be fined under an amendment to the Pennsylvania Election Code. The bill would post increasing penalties at local municipal levels, and 50-thousand at the state and up to 250-thousand-dollars for the federal level.
