In what has been described as a heated meeting, a Penn State trustee’s resolution to name Penn State football field at Beaver Stadium after former head coach Joe Paterno was introduced and then minutes later withdrawn, when Paterno’s son Jay objected to the timing. Last week, board member Anthony Lubrano, a long-time supporter of Coach Paterno, made the proposal. Paterno had been head football coach for 45 years until the board fired him in 2011 during the Jerry Sandusky child sex abuse scandal. Coach Paterno died in 2012. Penn State’s President Neeli Bendapudi along with her administration, does not support the idea of honoring Joe Paterno at this time, a decision that Paterno’s son Jay supports, saying the school needs to be focusing on challenges its currently facing like the upcoming cuts and the budget deficit. He suggested that last week’s proposal be considered later. Lubrano withdrew his resolution upon Paterno’s request.
