Algae Blooms Found in Somerset River Lake

algae

Residents in Somerset County are being advised to avoid the Youghiogheny River Lake as its being tested for potential toxins.  Algae blooms have been reported, and officials say the spillway swim beach is closed until further notice.  The algae blooms were discovered this past weekend.  Harmful algae blooms occur when certain types of microscopic organisms multiply and produce toxins in water.  Touching, inhaling, ingesting these toxins while swimming and boating, eating fish caught in contaminated water, or using contaminated water to cook with, can be harmful to both people and animals.
