U.S. Steel President David Burritt says serious questions will be raised about the company headquarters staying in Pittsburgh if the proposed sale to Nippon Steel does not go through. Burritt shared the message yesterday before employees gathered for a rally in favor of the merger outside their Grant Street offices. The Washington Post broke the news yesterday that President Biden is planning to formally block the acquisition of U.S. Steel by the Japanese firm. Burritt and other corporate executives argue that the 15-billion-dollar sale is needed to keep thousands of jobs in the Mon Valley. However, officials with the United Steelworkers union say such a merger would violate the company’s collective bargaining agreement and would put national defense and America’s critical supply chain at risk.
