Two public hearings were conducted last night by the Penn Cambria School Board in regards to the possibility of closing its intermediate and middle schools for a centralized campus. The middle school, which is located in Gallitzen, is in need of renovations and repair, to the tune of over $10 million. If the school were to close the school district could save nearly $300,000 a year in operational costs. The intermediate school, located in Lilly also is in need of repair and renovations, totally over $3 million. Closing that school would save the district nearly $217,000 a year. It was noted last night that a project creating a centralized campus at the pre-primary and high schools in Cresson, and closing the other schools is what seems to be garnering the most attention within the community. The school board is not allowed to vote on closing the schools until a three-month cooldown period expires in December.
