According to numbers put together by State Farm Insurance, Pennsylvania ranks 4th in the country for animal collisions. According to statistics, one in every 61 drivers in the state experiences an animal collision, with deer being the number one animal involved. Pennsylvania had the highest number of claims in the nation with more than 150,000. A few tips to avoid collisions with animals include slowing down, especially if you see an animal near a road. Pay attention to deer crossing signs, and don’t swerve. If a crash with an animal is inevitable, maintain control of your vehicle and don’t veer off the road. Also, flick high beams on wildlife. That may cause animals to run. Finally be aware of peak season. Animal crashes, especially with deer, occur most often from October through December, which is both mating and hunting season.
