Campfires are temporarily banned in Pennsylvania state parks and forest lands. The Department of Conservation of Natural Resources says campfires are prohibited until further notice due to the ongoing drought. DCNR says leaf litter, fine twigs, and dried branches are “prime fuel sources” for a fire that could spread out of control in the dry conditions. More than 100 wildfires have started in Pennsylvania over the past week. In the meantime, the National Weather Service has issued a fire weather watch through this afternoon in our region. The affected counties include Blair, Southern Centre, Huntingdon, Juniata, Bedford, and Mifflin Counties. A fire weather watch occurs when critical fire weather conditions are possible, like high winds and low humidity, increasing the risk of wildfires.
