The suspect in the killing of United Healthcare CEO Brian Thompson has hired a prominent Manhatten defense attorney as prosecutors continue to work to return Luigi Mangione to New York.  The 26-year-old Mangione will be represented by Karen Friendman Agnifilo, who is a veteran of New York City’s criminal justice system.  Mangione was arrested last Monday at McDonalds along Plank Road in Altoona when a patron recognized him and had an employee call 911.  When local police arrested Mangione he was found carrying a firearm which was consistent with the weapon used to murder Thompson, and several fake ID’s.  He was arrested on charges of possession of an unlicensed firearm, forgery and providing false ID to police.  He remains in custody at SCI Huntingdon awaiting extradition.  Last Friday, Manhattan D.A. Alvin Bragg said there were indications Mangione may now give up fighting extradition.  New York Gov. Kathy Hochul has said she’s prepared to ask her Pennsylvania counterpart, Gov. Josh Shapiro, to intervene and issue a governor’s warrant requiring Mangione’s extradition if he does not agree to be moved voluntarily.
