Bellwood, PA – At approximately 3:00 a.m. today, a fire broke out in the Bellwood-Antis Middle School, specifically in the gymnasium and boiler room area. The Excelsior Fire Department responded promptly and successfully extinguished the blaze. Despite their swift action, significant damage was sustained in the affected areas, and smoke filled both the Middle School and High School buildings, rendering them unsafe for occupancy.
As a result, all schools in the Bellwood-Antis School District were closed today to ensure the safety of our students and staff. We understand the inconvenience this may cause and appreciate the community’s understanding during this challenging time.
Investigations conducted by law enforcement have revealed evidence that the fire was an act of arson. A suspect has been taken into custody, and Bellwood-Antis School District officials are actively cooperating with the Pennsylvania State Police and local law enforcement agencies to assist in their ongoing investigation.
The safety of our students and staff remains our top priority. We are currently assessing the damage and working to develop a comprehensive plan to address the disruption to our instructional schedule. Updates, including details regarding instruction for the remainder of the week, will be shared with families as soon as they become available.
We extend our gratitude to the Excelsior Fire Department, law enforcement agencies, and all first transparency and timely communication as we navigate the recovery process.
For further updates, please monitor the District’s website and social media channels. Any additional questions or concerns can be directed to the District office.
