The future of U.S. Steel in Western Pennsylvania now seems uncertain following President Biden’s decision to block a merger with Japan’s Nippon Steel.  Biden made the announcement on Friday, saying the proposed 15-billion-dollar deal will not be moving forward because the sale “threatens to impair the national security of the United States”.  West Mifflin Mayor Chris Kelly called Biden’s choice “politics at its worst” while speaking to KDKA-TV last week, saying Nippon’s promise to keep up production in the region for the next decade is essentially unheard of in modern business deals.  On the other hand, United Steelworkers President David McCall praised Biden, calling his decision “the right thing for our members and for America’s national security”.  Corporate leaders with U.S. Steel previously said they could not guarantee that their headquarters would stay in Pittsburgh if the deal did not go through.
