Sen. John Fetterman of Pennsylvania is the first Senate Democrat to sign onto a Republican-led bill that would require federal authorities to detain undocumented immigrants arrested for theft-related crimes. The bill, passed Tuesday in the House, and is scheduled to come up for a vote in the Senate tomorrow. In addition to requiring federal detention of undocumented immigrants who commit theft, the bill would also allow states to sue the Department of Homeland Security for harm caused to their citizens because of illegal immigration, this in turn would greatly expand the authority of state attorneys general. The bill has been named after 22-year-old Laken Riley, who was murdered while jogging at the University of Georgia. Her convicted killer, Jose Ibarra, had entered the United States illegally and had been previously released after an arrest for stealing from a Walmart. He was sentenced to life without parole in November.
