State Committee Proposes Closing SCI Rockview And Quehanna Boot Camp

The Pennsylvania Department of Corrections is looking to close SCI Rockview in Bellefonte, Centre County, and the Quehanna Boot Camp in Clearfield County, as a cost cutting measure.  State officials say the 110-year-old Rockview Prison, which is the second oldest state prison in Pennsylvania, is expected to need about 74-million-dollars in upgrades over the next five years.  SCI Rockview currently holds more than 21-hundred inmates and employs 658 people.  Quehanna, which houses low-risk inmates, is also in need of upgrades, with costs currently projected at over $5 million.  Secretary of Corrections Laurel Harry said every prison employee would be guaranteed a job offer at their existing pay, and classification, if the prisons close.  Authorities note that these proposals will be open to public comment for three months before any final decision is made.
