Backyard Beats Listing 7/29/22: PA Roundhouse Rally, Activate Altoona, Flood City Music Fest and More!

Here is a listing of area live music and online music happenings for the weekend and week of Friday, July 29 through Thursday, August 4.

Once again, a busy live music weekend has arrived in central PA, and several big events highlight the performance slate over the next seven days.

The PA Roundhouse Rally reconvenes Friday and Saturday at Roundhouse Harley-Davidson near Duncansville. Friday’s musical slate features a smorgasbord for blues and roots music connoisseurs, as Felix & the Hurricanes and Washington, DC’s legendary Nighthawks take the stage. Marking their 50th anniversary as a band this year, founding member, singer, harmonica master and ringleader Mark Wenner and the Nighthawks will take the stage starting at 8 p.m. Their resume includes nonstop touring, opening and sharing stages with blues royalty such as Muddy Waters, James Cotton, Robert Cray, Stevie Ray Vaughan, the Fabulous Thunderbirds and others. The Hurricanes will get the party started at 5 p.m., and there is a good chance audience members will get to witness members of both bands joining each other onstage during their respective sets. Saturday’s music lineup features Lauren & Joe starting at 2 p.m., followed by Jack Squat at 5 p.m. and – at 8 p.m. – That Arena Rock Show, a theatrical rock experience spotlighting rock of the 1970s and 80s from such names as AC/DC, Van Halen, Aerosmith, Def Leppard, Poison, Bon Jovi, Kiss and more. Admission to the Roundhouse Rally is $15 at the gate; and the Friday night admission covers Saturday’s attendance as well. The PA Roundhouse Rally is a 501c3 organization that benefits local veterans, youth and other charities.

Also happening Friday and Saturday is the Activate Altoona Music Festival, taking place at Altoona’s People’s Natural Gas Field. A large contingent of local musicians and bands will join forces to present tributes to 11 different bands; three on Friday night and seven on Saturday. Tributes will include the Allman Brothers, AC/DC (performed by Jack Squat) and Black Sabbath (performed by Black Sun) on Friday night; and Green Day (performed by Abstentious), Alice In Chains, Social Distortion (performed by The Snipped), The Cure, Blink-182, Rush, Stone Temple Pilots and Prince (performed by The Pennsoulvanians). See the listing below for the performance times of each of the tributes.

And the 2022 edition of the AmeriServ Flood City Music Festival takes place Friday and Saturday at People’s Natural Gas Park in Johnstown. A blend of national, regional and local performers will entertain on three stages during both days. Friday’s slate includes Railroad Earth, Vanessa Collier, The Fritz, Shelf Life String Band and more. Saturday’s headliner will be national recording group The Spin Doctors; also appearing will be Buffalo Rose, Habatat, Karina Rykman, Big Something and others. See the listing below for the festival’s performance and stage schedule.

Once again, it’s an exciting weekend if you are a live music fan. Browse the listing below, find your show choices, and get out there and SUPPORT LIVE MUSIC!
