Backyard Beats Listing 2/10/23: A Prom Night, Benefits, Super Bowl, Valentine’s Day Events and More!

Here is a listing of area live music and online music happenings for the weekend and week of Friday, February 10 through Thursday, February 16.

It’s a busy weekend on the area live music scene with the Super Bowl and Valentine’s Day spaced two days apart, plus benefit shows, a prom night and more.

The prom night – the African American Heritage Festival Prom Night – takes place on Saturday evening at The Casino at Altoona’s Lakemont Park, raising funds for the annual Blair County African American Heritage Festival, which takes place in July. This inaugural prom event will present all the amenities of a prom, from red carpet entryway for arriving couples to a professional photographer, snacks and libations, and entertainment from The PennSoulvanians and DJ Tyson. The event gets under way at 6 p.m.; however, tickets are sold out.

The Prom Night is one of several benefit events and fundraisers taking place this weekend. The Shovel Head Tavern in Cresson (formerly Magoo’s) will host a day-long Nicholas Foreman Memorial event on Saturday, which will raise funds for The Healing Patch, a program of the Home Nursing Agency that provides services to grieving children and families after the loss of loved ones. A pool tournament will kick things off at 12 noon, with live music starting at 5 p.m. with performances from The Pines and Felix & the Hurricanes. There will also be a basket raffle, plus food and refreshments. From Gallitzin, Nicholas Foreman passed away in March, 2022.

The State Theatre in State College will host the 11th annual Rock the 80’s benefit concert on Saturday evening, raising funds for local cancer patients through the Bob Perks Cancer Assistance Fund. The event kicks off at 7 p.m., and will feature performances of 1980s-era music by a multitude of State College area music scene names – Anchor & Arrow, the Corner Brothers, Crush, Genuine Red & the Issues, J.R. Mangan Band, Miss Melanie, Spider Kelly, The Extractors and The Long Afternoon. 1980s attire is encouraged. Limited standing room tickets are available for $40 and can be purchased through the State Theatre box office.

For major concert action, the “Rockzilla Tour” arrives at the 1st Summit Arena at Cambria County War Memorial in Johnstown on Friday night, featuring Papa Roach and Falling In Reverse…And Carrie Underwood will perform at Penn State’s Bryce Jordan Center, also on Friday night.

A new local band featuring some familiar area music names takes the stage for the first time on Friday night at Altoona’s 4D’s Lounge. The Bomb Cyclones will feature singer Mellissa Vella and guitarist/singer Kenny Karlheim, who also comprise the acoustic Mellissa & Kenny duo. Also in this group are guitarist Rich Johnson, bassist Bill Nusom and drummer Paul Caracciolo II. The Bomb Cyclones will perform a variety of rock covers. The music begins at 10:30 p.m.
