A report from CapitolWire in the Altoona Mirror indicates that Shapiro is proposing spending increases for the state system of higher education, but only at 2%. Meanwhile the governor is proposing a 7% increase for Penn State, Pitt and Temple. Members of PASSHE are upset because this low level funding increase may cause the state owned schools to raise tuition, something they do not want to do. Senate republicans said in a statement that state schools should not raise tuition, then expect to receive increased state support. PASSHE officials said last week that Gov Shapiro’s proposed 2% increase would not allow schools to maintain a tuition freeze.
