A news report indicates that the Altoona Fire Department was recently given a fire prevention and safety grant, from the Federal Emergency Management Agency. That money will allow the department to purchase smoke alarms to give to residents. Firefighters will come to your home and install the device, and give you information on fire prevention. It is recommended that you put in new batteries every time the clocks change in your existing smoke alarms. You should also test those alarms monthly. If you would like to get a smoke detector, contact the Altoona Fire Dept at 949-2230
