A report in the Altoona Mirror indicates that the county commissioners have unveiled the preliminary budget, and it contains a 10% hike in property taxes. The budget, as it stands now, has a projected deficit of $6.7 million and this tax increase can cut that number by half, with the other half to be covered with reserve funds. If passed, the increase will mean that a person owning a property assessed at $100,000 will have to come up with an additional $42.50 in taxes for 2024. Earlier this week, Altoona City Council announced a tax hike for city property owners. The budget is scheduled to be formally presented to the public this afternoon in the courthouse basement.
