A new bill is to be introduced this week that requires cursive be taught in Pennsylvania schools. The bill is the brain child of Republican State Representative Joe Adams of Pike County. If passed, the bill would require cursive handwriting be taught at certain grade levels. Adams said, “Being able to write and read cursive is a fundamental and necessary skill for everyone to learn.” Those who advocate for cursive handwriting believe the practice has cognitive and educational benefits. Pennsylvania is not the only state to consider requiring cursive in schools. According to the National Education Association, there are 21 states that required cursive to be part of the public school curriculum in 2022.
