State Legislator Wants Reform for Tax Appeals

A Democratic state lawmaker says he’ll introduce legislation next session that could help residents and businesses who want to challenge their state tax bills. Representative Tim Briggs of Montgomery County says the legislation would allow taxpayers in certain situations to file appeals past the current statutory deadline. It would also create a new, independent mediation process in an effort to help settle disputes quicker. The state Department of Revenue is expected to hear 35-thousand appeals this year.
