A lawmaker from Allegheny who is a doctor is hoping his bill on medical debt in Pennsylvania will pass the State Senate. Representative Arvind Venkat’s measure would ask the state to discharge medical debt of eligible residents by contracting with a medical debt relief coordinator. Pennsylvanians could get relief if they have a household income at or below 400 percent of the federal poverty guidelines, or medical debt that is equal to five percent or more of their household income. The measure passed the House before the holiday recess.
