A group of House Democrats has announced plans for legislation that would call for the state to provide renters with legal counsel if they’re being evicted. Governor Josh Shapiro included an identical provision for the taxpayer-provided funds in his budget released last week. The group of lawmakers who say they’ll introduce the measure say eviction records follow people for years and can block them from getting a new place to live, which often leads to homelessness. They also say these programs save millions by reducing money that cities spend on eviction costs.
