More than 50 counties across Pennsylvania are now quarantining spotted lanternflies. State Agriculture Secretary Russell Redding is urging residents to destroy their eggs before they hatch in the upcoming weeks. The invasive insect that’s native to Asia was first seen in the U.S. in Berks County ten years ago when it was discovered on imported material. Officials say the black bugs with white dots and red wings remain a danger to food and ornamental crops. Agriculture experts strongly encourage people to stomp, squash or swat full-grown lanternflies when they see them, too.
