The battle of the convenience stores is heating up. Wawa is opening 40 new stores in Central Pennsylvania with its first locations opening later this year in Dauphin County. Also, two locations being considered are in Centre County. One in Benner Township, the other in Ferguson Township. Tomorrow, Ferguson Township’s Board of Supervisors will consider a variance request for a Wawa on West Aaron Drive, near the intersection with North Atherton Street. Last July, Wawa submitted a land development plan for its first Centre County location near the intersection of Benner Pike and Eagle Point in Benner Township, directly across from a Sheetz store. Wawa says they will invest nearly 7 million dollars for each store and will employ about 35 people, which collectively would be about 1400 new jobs within the Central Pa., expansion. According to Wawa, the company has stores in Pa., New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, Florida and Washington D.C. with nearly 1000 locations.
