Today is Juneteenth, a day marking the emancipation of enslaved people in the U.S. In 2021, President Biden made Juneteenth a national holiday meaning federal, state and municipal offices will be closed and that includes no mail delivery today. Juneteenth is also known as National Freedom Day and marks June 19, 1865 when Union soldiers reached Galveston, Texas, the furthest point in the south, with news of the end of the Civil War. Juneteenth is a day to commemorate emancipation, and the steps taken towards freedom.
