Pennsylvania state agencies, including PennDOT, the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, and the Office of the State Fire Commissioner, emphasized the importance of safety during the Fourth of July weekend, during a gathering at Codorus State Park in York County last Friday. Officials stressed the significance of responsible celebrations and the dangers of impaired driving, with PennDOT Secretary Mike Carroll advocating for the use of sober drivers and alternative transportation to prevent impaired driving incidents. During the holiday, state and local police will conduct DUI checkpoints and patrols, funded by PennDOT, through a nearly $6 million grant from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. This enforcement aims to deter impaired driving, which is also a concern on waterways, as indicated by 39 boating-under-the-influence arrests last year. Fireworks safety is another critical issue, with the State Fire Commissioner’s office issuing guidelines to prevent injuries and fires, emphasizing sober handling of fireworks and recommending protective measures like safety glasses and having water sources ready for emergencies.
