Pennsylvania Department of Health: Xylazine Care Kit Demand Outstripping Supply

wrta-logo-sm

Public health managers in Harrisburg are sending thousands of Xylazine care kits to communities across the state, but there aren’t enough to keep-up with the demand.  The state’s Department of Health said it is sending 50 thousand wound care kits to local health agencies.  Wounds are often found in those injecting the drug.  The wounds often start out as small bumps with a white or purple center with a dark red fluid.  If left untreated these wounds can become serious and get infected with bacteria.  Xylazine, has exploded in Pennsylvania, and the number of deaths tied to it has also jumped.  The drug is a veterinary tranquilizer that is being found in some illicit drug supplies.  The Department of Health says 51 people OD’d on on the drug back in 2018,  and that number jumped to over 11 hundred by 2021.  The Department of Health says it will try and make more wound care kits available, but didn’t have a timeline as to when that might be.
