A Jefferson Township, Somerset County man is facing charges of animal neglect after taking a severely malnourished dog to a veterinary clinic. Police say in July, 69-year-old Wilmer Barron took his dog, a male Newfoundland, to Animal Medical Center in Somerset where staff alerted authorities, as the dog reportedly was soaked in urine, covered with thousands of maggots and had open wounds. The dog also had Lyme disease, and was severely dehydrated. Barron has been charged with three misdemeanor counts of animal neglect. A preliminary hearing has been scheduled for November 21st. The current condition of the dog is unknown at this time.
