An early morning fire at Bellwood Middle School has been determined to be arson and a suspect, who has not been identified, is in custody. The call came in at 3:19 this morning, for a fire in the school’s gym and boiler room area. Excelsior Fire Department had the fire under control quickly, however due to smoke and water damage, classes for the district were cancelled for the day. According to a statement from Bellwood-Antis School Superintendent, Ed DiSabato, investigations conducted by law enforcement revealed the fire was an act of arson. The statement further added that a suspect, had been taken into custody, and school officials are actively cooperating with the Pennsylvania State Police and local law enforcement agencies to assist in their ongoing investigation. Officials with the school district are assessing the situation to determine if its safe for students to return to school this week or not.
