measles

Pennsylvania has reported its first measles case of the year.  The case was reported over the weekend in a Philadelphia suburb in Montgomery County.   Reportedly the case involves an unvaccinated child and is related to international travel and not a domestic outbreak.  Several cases of the highly contagious disease have also been reported in neighboring New Jersey.  According to the Pennsylvania Department of Health, “there is no immediate risk to the general public at this time, as 94% of the state’s residents are vaccinated against the measles virus.”  Recent outbreaks include a case in which an unvaccinated child in rural West Texas died from the disease.  That case is part of the largest outbreak of measles in Texas in 30 years, with 158 cases spread across nine counties.  Warning signs of measles include respiratory viruses, runny nose, cough, fever, sores in the mouth, and a reddish rash.
