A Central Pennsylvania state representative is making a push for K-9 officers to be trained in detecting fentanyl. Representative Mike Armanini who represents Clearfield and Elk Counties, believes with the rise of fentanyl overdoses and deaths, training should be made available for K-9 officers to sniff out fentanyl, a drug that currently they can’t detect. Both K-9 handlers, and state lawmakers believe that targeted training can help fight the fentanyl crisis. The state representative plans on introducing a bill in the state house that would require specialized training for K-9s. The proposed legislation would require the Municipal Police Officers’ Education and Training Commission to develop standards for training and certifying canine units to be able to specifically detect fentanyl.
