Backyard Beats Listing 5/21: We Care Blues & Brews, Roundhouse Rally and a Singing Hot Dog!

Here is a listing of area live music and online music happenings for the weekend and week of Friday, May 21 through Thursday, May 27.

With the recent easing of some COVID-19-related restrictions, more live music venues across the area are beginning to host some performances. The listing below includes both area live public shows and online live-streaming shows; keep checking back, as this listing will be updated as new shows are announced.

If you are attending a public show, be aware that seating and admission may be limited due to remaining COVID-19 restrictions, and masks and social distancing may be required. Please be responsible, and respect others’ personal space if they wish to socially distance from other people.

For online performances, if a “virtual tip jar” situation is available during live streams, please consider tipping these performers, and support them during this time when they cannot earn income playing shows at public venues. Websites for these performers are also listed; please consider purchasing their music digitally or via CD, which is another way to SUPPORT LIVE MUSIC!

Live music continues its comeback post COVID-19, with more indoor venues resuming live music and more outdoor events entering the calendar as spring temperatures continue to heat up.

One outdoor highlight this weekend is the 8th annual We Care Foundation Blues & Brews event on Saturday afternoon at Lakemont Park’s C2 Trolley House. The event kicks off at 3 p.m., and will feature beer tastings from more than 50 breweries, wine tasting, a light food menu, and live music from Asbury Lane and Miss Melanie. Tickets are $40 per person (over-21 only), and proceeds benefit the We Care Foundation, which provides financial support for outpatient occupational, physical and speech therapy services for children from birth to age 21.

Entering the radar is the start of the new season for the PA Roundhouse Rally Concert Series, which happens over five weekends throughout the spring and summer season at Roundhouse Harley-Davidson between Altoona and Duncansville. The first concert weekend commences on Thursday evening with Hair Force One bringing their “headbangers ball” to the stage starting at 8 p.m. Felix & the Hurricanes and Shallow 9 both play next Friday, and Matt Pletcher and Guns N’Roses tribute group Get Your Guns perform next Saturday, along with the Bacon & Bourbon Fest to benefit the Ronald McDonald House. Admission fee for the weekend is $15 per person.

And for something completely different…Your opportunity to enjoy live music performed by a hot dog takes place Wednesday evening at the Burger Hut between Buckhorn and Ashville. Recently the subject of a feature story in the Altoona Mirror, longtime area musician Tom Brunner brings his latest solo performance incarnation – Hot Dog Boy – to Burger Hut for a two-hour performance starting at 5 p.m. Decked in hot dog regalia (including bun and mustard), Hot Dog Boy will perform his selection of original songs and maybe a few of his takes on other song favorites. Admission is free.
