Here is a listing of area live music and online music happenings for the weekend and week of Friday, November 12 through Thursday, November 18.
Some noteworthy touring visitors will be playing on area stages during the next seven days. Electric blues guitarist, singer, songwriter, producer and Blues Hall Of Fame inductee Joe Louis Walker (also known as ‘JLW”) will perform on the Oilhouse stage at Johnstown’s People’s Natural Gas Park on Friday night. A San Francisco native, JLW has established himself as a prominent name of modern blues, fusing traditional blues styles with elements of jazz, soul, rock and gospel, and signed a recording deal with Polygram Records’ Verve/Gitanes label in the early 1990s. He has worked and recorded with such names as B.B. King, James Cotton, Branford Marsalis, the Tower Of Power horn section and more. Opening the show will be Habatat. Gates open at 6:30 p.m. with music beginning at 7:30; admission at the gate is $30 per person.
National recording group The Gin Blossoms will perform at State College’s State Theatre on Tuesday night. Surfacing from the Phoenix and Tempe, Arizona scene in the late 1980s, The Gin Blossoms saw fame arrive in the 1990s following the release of their 1992 album “New Miserable Experience” and its subsequent chart hits “Hey Jealousy,” “Allison Road,” “Until I Fall Away” and “Found Out About You,” plus several more hits during the rest of the decade. Tuesday’s concert will begin at 8 p.m., and tickets are available through the State Theatre’s box office.
With concerns over COVID-19 again prompting the cancellation of the public live “Patched Together: A Day of Music to Benefit the Healing Patch” event this year, an online live music event will again be staged to raise funds for the Home Nursing Agency’s Healing Patch program. The Patched Together Live Stream will take place Thursday evening on Facebook, and feature Altoona area band favorites The Pennsoulvanians and The Jaded Lips. The live stream will begin at 7 p.m. Viewers will have opportunities to donate through Facebook, Venmo and Paypal to help the Healing Patch, which provides counseling and mentoring services to young people who have experienced the losses of family members and other loved ones.
And the IMS Gallitzin (Italian Mutual Society) is hosting a benefit event on Friday night to help a community member who is battling cancer. “Dancing for Dauber” will raise money to help out Christopher “Dauber” Cox, a lifetime member and firefighter with the Gallitzin Fire Company No. 1, and his family. Doors open at 6 p.m., with music beginning at 8 with popular area rock band Hot Wax. Donation at the door is $5, and a variety of food items will be available, plus raffles and 50/50’s, with all proceeds going to Dauber and his family.
