CREWS WERE BUSY YESTERDAY CLEANING UP A FUEL SPILL ON THE TRACKS OF NORFOLK SOUTHERN IN ALTOONA.
A REPORT BY THE ALTOONA MIRROR INDICATES THAT A SPILL WAS CREATED ON THE TRACKS NEAR GARFIELD PARK AFTER A PIECE OF DEBRIS APPARENTLY CAUSED A LEAK IN A FUEL TANK OF A NORFOLK SOUTHERN LOCOMOTIVE, CAUSING A SPILL ON TO THE TRACKS. SOME 450 GALLONS OF DIESEL FUEL REPORTEDLY LEAKED OUT. ACCORDING TO AN NS SPOKESPERSON WHO TALKED WITH THE MIRROR, THE SPILL WAS CONTAINED AND NORFOLK SOUTHERN WILL CONTINUE TO MONITOR THE AREA AS THE SNOW MELTS. THE SPILL DID NOT CREATE A HARZARDOUS SITUATION FOR ANYONE. THE INVESTIGATION WILL CONTINUE TO MAKE SURE THAT THERE IS NO FURTHER DAMAGE TO THE GROUND SURROUNDING THE SPILL.
