Here is a listing of area live music and online music happenings for the weekend and week of Friday, April 22 through Thursday, April 28.
Live music is starting to make its way back outdoors, and plenty of bands and artists will perform in downtown Altoona on Saturday during the Blair Creators Festival, which runs from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. in and near Heritage Plaza. Previously known as the StARThere, this festival will feature music, performing arts, culinary arts, visual arts and more. Multiple art vendors will present their creations for display and purchase, and live music will take place in two locations, with bands performing in the Heritage Plaza, and acoustic performers making their music at Veterans Mall. Admission to the festival is free. The Blair Creators Festival is presented by ArtsAltoona and the Penn State Altoona Sheetz Fellows.
For connoisseurs of the music of the Beastie Boys, McGarvey’s welcomes the return of York-based Beastie Boys tribute group Brass Monkeys on Saturday night. Billed as “the Ultimate Beastie Boys Tribute,” Brass Monkeys will perform tunes from throughout the Beastie Boys career, including the group’s established favorites such as “Brass Monkey,” “No Sleep Til Brooklyn,” “Sabotage,” the group’s quintessential party anthem “Fight for Your Right (to Party).” Area favorites Shallow 9 will kick off the musical festivities at 9 p.m.
And if you like the taste of maple and don’t mind a road trip to enjoy it, the annual Pennsylvania Maple Festival in Meyersdale kicks off this weekend. The festival takes place throughout downtown Meyersdale on Saturday and Sunday, and then resumes Wednesday and continues through the following Sunday, May 1. Lots of tasty maple products will be available for purchase, from maple syrup to maple candy to maple mustard and much more. Also happening will be horsedrawn wagon rides, a classic truck and motorcycle show on Sunday, a quilt show, dinner theatre and other performances, the always-popular local Lions Club pancake and sausage breakfast served from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., children’s activities, plus live music, vendors and displays at Festival Park. Performing on Saturday will be the Blind Lane Band from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., and Kamp and Kompany will perform Sunday from noon to 3 p.m. Admission to most of the festival’s events is free; there is a small admission charge to enter Festival Park.
